Cliff brought her out of her reverie by offering her one of the doughnuts from the bag. She selected a filled raspberry one and munched it happily.

“Did Bev not give you any breakfast this morning?” he asked, deftly sipping his coffee and negotiating a tight bend in the road.

“Bev?” Faith said, puzzled.

“At the Paradise. She normally sets out some of Mary’s doughnuts and a pot of coffee for the guests.”

Faith felt her cheeks flush. She thought about making up a story, but she’d never been a very good liar.

“Oh, um, actually, we didn’t stay at the motel. It was a little bit out of our budget so we went back to the van for the night. I hope you don’t mind, seeing as it was parked in your yard.”

“You should have said. It doesn’t bother me at all but I could have left you access to the kitchen and toilet. Lucky King took a liking to your friend, huh? He’d probably have been barking all night otherwise. Will Anna be there tonight as well?”

“Yes, is that okay?”

“No skin off my nose. Just send her a message on your phone and tell her there’s a key hanging under the hose box next to the office, got a yellow plastic tab. That will let her get into the building after Mike’s closed up.”

Faith dutifully pulled out her phone to text Anna.

“Did you say your brother was in care, Cliff?”

“Yeah, has been for a few years now. Parkinson’s.”

“Oh, that’s tough.”

“Yeah. He was an electrician. Started getting tremors and whatnot in his fifties. Had to retire eventually. He’s pretty bad now. Been in a wheelchair for about a year, and now he’s got a chest infection, pneumonia maybe.”

“Oh, that’s no good.”

“No, but he still mostly knows who we all are, which is good. Means we can say goodbye, you know?”

Faith thought about that as they drove, about her brother and sisters and their relationship to each other. She was so glad she was making this trip to see Isaac, and had the chance to build up their connection again.

They arrived in Invercargill well before lunch and Faith got Cliff to drop her at the shops so she could pick up some flowers. She had rung Keith and arranged for him to pick her up, so she gave Cliff an awkward side hug and a thank you and waited for her brother-in-law to arrive.

He pulled up in a beautifully restored red 1980s Rolls-Royce and got out with a huge grin on his face. He was in his sixties, with salt and pepper hair and wire-rimmed glasses. He had on checked golf pants and a striped jumper with a bright-pink triangle on the front.

“Oh, my Lord, you look so much younger than I was expecting,” he told her. “I’ve been looking at your crusty old brother too long.” He laughed as he hugged her. “He is going to die when he sees you.”

“So he really doesn’t know I’m coming?” Faith asked. She was a bit nervous to see Isaac, she realised.
